Ryobi Weed Wacker: Only by the whirling grace of a string trimmer slicing down the tall grass around the mailbox, front steps, fences, and flower beds does a property look truly polished. We’ve tested string trimmers on weedy lots and steep hills, and we once flattened 12,598 square feet of an overgrown field.
The Ego ST1511T Power+ String Trimmer with Power load is the best tool (also known as weed whackers or weed eaters1). Unfortunately, the hassle of owning a small engine is due to the continued success of the cordless string trimmers we’ve verified.
And the social and legal trends we’re witnessing concerning gas engines. But we did decide to overcorrect the issue drastically, so we now have a recommendation for a scythe. Yes, a scythe.
Ego ST1511T Power+ String Trimmer with Power load
The best string trimmer, Ego’s ST1511T far, outdid the other brands in run time and power. Its telescoping shaft and handle stand are easy to adjust and make the tool very comfortable, even for extended trimming sessions.
Compared with other battery trimmers, the Ego ST1511T Power+ String Trimmer with Power load differs. This trimmer cut finished 1-inch-thick Japanese knotweed as if it remained grass, while most of the others pathetically slapped their strings compared to the thick stalks. Seeing all that power, you’d expect this trimmer to be noisy.
But it was the lowest tool we tested, with a hair-dryer-like hum that announced more pleasant than the whine of its competitors. This perfect, the latest in a long line of successful Ego trimmers, distinguishes itself with an easily flexible telescoping shaft and a quick adjustment for the secondary handle. It allows it to work for various heights and body types.
The Ego ST1511T is as powerful and affordable as a gas tool—but without messy fuel, smelly exhaust, or time-consuming maintenance. It was also amongst the most capable cordless trimmers, with enough run time to cut a 1-foot-wide strip of grass nearly two-thirds of a mile long on a single battery charge.
Ego ST1521S Power+ String Trimmer with Power load
The next-best trimmer, The Ego ST1521S, is similar to our top pick but lacks the telescoping shaft and quick handle adjustment. If the Ego ST1511T is unavailable, we also like the Ego ST1521S Power+ String Trimmer with Power load.
This is the previous cohort of Ego string trimmers, and it shares much of what makes the ST1511T such a success: extended battery life, excellent power, and easy line change. The significant differences are that it doesn’t have the contracting shaft or the quick adjustment on the handle.
So it’s not as supple for varying body heights. However, the two trimmers remain typically sold for around the same price, so we endorse choosing this model only if the ST1511T remains out of stock and you can’t wait.
Ryobi RY40270 40V Brushless Expand-It String Trimmer
Not as influential but attachment-ready, This Ryobi remains not as powerful as the Ego models. But it is compatible with Ryobi’s Expand-It scheme for attachments, which means it can double as a tiller, a brush cutter, and more.
If you’re looking for a trimmer that can dual as an all-purpose lawn tool, we like the Ryobi RY40270 40V Brushless Expand-It Cord Trimmer. However, it can’t cut tall and very thick weeds with the ease of the Ego models.
It still has the strength to slice dense grass and the run time to handle a large property. Unlike the Egos, however, it originates attachment-ready. So you can eliminate the trimmer head and replace it with other yard tools similar to a pole saw, an encounter cutter, or a small cultivator (each sold separately).
The Ryobi characteristically sells for about the similar as the Ego ST1511T. But, over, the Ryobi isn’t as effective on the bushy stuff. It’s also heavier and much louder and doesn’t have the ergonomic ease of the telescoping chute or on-the-fly handle change. The Ryobi uses a hand-crank reel device, which brands line loading easier than the older models, but it’s not as decent as the push-button system on our main pick.

Worx WG170.2 GT Revolution 20V Power Share
Lightweight, with a full assortment of ergonomic changes, the Worx is not as powerful as the others, but it’s an excellent fit for small lawns. We like the Worx WG170.2 GT Rebellion 20V Power Share Cord Trimmer and Edger if you have only minimal trimming needs.
It’s much lesser than the Ego ST1511T and nowhere close as powerful, but it’s great on grass. And it has some ergonomic adjustments not originate from competing models that make it contented for people with various body types.
This model originates with a small set of wheels, which regulate to convert the trimmer into an edger and smooth a very small mini-mower. We developed that Worx was quieter than its competitors. And it’s priced in the mid-range of what similar models cost.
Lee Valley Traditional Austrian Scythe Set
Your neighbors will stare, but a scythe remains a beautiful, meditative tool and, if used correctly, very effective at cutting grass or knocking down an overgrown area. Suppose your trimming needs include choosing a sizeable grassy place, like an LA hillside or perhaps a spot that’s not quite a lawn but not quite woods. Then, reflect on bringing a scythe into your life, precisely the Lee Valley Traditional Austrian Scythe Set.
A scythe is an ancient tool, discarded by our contemporary culture, yet wildly effective at cutting grass. In addition to its cutting abilities, it proposes a tranquil mental and physical experience, accompanied only by the whizzing swish of the blade against the grass.
In a lot of habits, it’s the anti-string trimmer joist. Cutting grass with a scythe has a knowledge curve, and knowing how to sharpen the blade is essential, but these remain both learnable skills and not as bodily demanding as you may think.
There’s no question you’ll look out of home, and people might whisper when you’re not looking, but that’s okay because your eye-rolling neighbors perhaps don’t understand what an enjoyable, peaceful time you’re having.
RYOBI 40-Volt Lithium-Ion Cordless Attachment Capable String Trimmer with 4.0 Ah Battery and Charger Included (Open Box). Trimmers are a relatively small, lightweight yard tool for trimming grass and small shrubs, especially in hard-to-reach areas.
